The short answer is yes.
And if you have 3rd party thermostats or smart TRVs, your heat pump is likely not running very well and Havenwise will be a big benefit. Read here why that is [Link]
The below instructions aim to create a configuration where your 3rd party thermostats or smart TRVs are not (or as little as possible) interfering with the heating system. Technically, this is called using the stats / TRVs as “temperature limiters”.
How to set up your 3rd party thermostats or smart TRVs for use with Havenwise
Remove any schedules from your room stats or smart TRVs
Increase the target temperature on them to 1-2C above the target you set in the Havenwise app, 24/7. Some rooms can be an exception, see here [Link to exceptions below]
Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean your house will heat up to such high temperatures. Havenwise makes sure your heat pump targets the temperature you have set in the Havenwise app, in a much more efficient way.
All this does is making sure the various rooms in your house are “ready” to receive heat when the heat pump is working.
Example
Let’s imagine you have the following temperature schedule in the Havenwise app:
07:00-09:00: 20C
16:00-22:00: 20.5C
In this case, you should set your thermostats and smart TRVs to a permanent 22.5C.
Exceptions
If you have certain rooms that tend to overheat versus the rest of your house, or if you prefer cooler bedrooms (like me), you can keep the temperature on your stats or TRVs in these rooms slightly lower than the rest.
It is important that you try to keep these exceptions to a minimum. Most stats and TRVs should be set sufficiently high, so these rooms are “open” to receive heat from the heat pump.
Why is this good?
It eliminates zones to a large degree, resulting in higher efficiency of your heat pump and lower bills.
It reduces the frequency of on/off cycles of your heat pump, so the heat pump will last longer.
It reduces the temperature swings through the day and in between rooms, so your house will feel more comfortable.
