How does Havenwise work if I have batteries and / or solar panels?

Havenwise has 2 operating modes, which you as a user can choose from. Depending on the time of year, the size of your battery / solar PV system, and your comfort preferences, you might prefer Mode 1 or Mode 2.

Callout: Mode 1 is the default mode when you create an account in the Havenwise app.

Mode 1: Heating and hot water optimised against your tariff.

How it works:

This is the default Havenwise mode. In this mode, Havenwise will take into account your electricity tariff to optimise your heating and hot water operation. That means Havenwise will make use of cheaper slots to “pre-heat” the home a bit, and will try to minimise the operation during the peak times.

This is not a simple “on during the cheap slots, off outside the cheap slots”. Havenwise will find an optimal balance between making use of your tariff, ensuring your heat pump operates efficiently, and your comfort. There is a lot of advanced mathematics under the hood to make this possible.

When is this a suitable mode:

If your battery / solar PV system is small compared to the consumption of your house and heat pump. In the absence of the optimisation for your tariff, your heat pump would consume expensive electricity from the grid.

In winter when the heat pump consumption becomes larger.

Mode 2: Heating ignores your tariff. Hot water optimised against your tariff.

How it works:

Havenwise will ignore your electricity tariff for the optimisation of heating. It will optimise for minimal energy consumption (in kWh), assuming your battery / PV system are providing cheap electricity to the heat pump for heating.

This is what is known in the industry as “low and slow”.

Note that the hot water will still be optimised against your tariff. In 99% of the cases, it just makes sense.

When is this a suitable mode:

If your battery / solar PV system is sufficiently big to provide cheap electricity throughout the day to your heat pump.

In the shoulder months and summer, when little heating is needed.

If a steady temperature is the most important factor for you, and you therefore don’t want any pre-heating or peak avoidance.

Important: At the moment, only the Havenwise team can switch you between modes. So if you want to go onto Mode 2, please reach out via the support button in the Havenwise app.
