What is the "learning phase"?

Basic explanation

During the initial days with Havenwise, your system goes through a learning phase. During this time, the Havenwise algorithms learn how your home heats up and cools down. It's trying to build an accurate model of your home, so your heat pump can operate in the most cost-effective way after the learning phase.

It's possible that Havenwise doesn't exactly follow your temperature setpoints during this initial phase. That is normal.

If at any point during the learning phase you're too cold, you can use the Boost button in the Havenwise app. The boost feature activates your heat pump quickly (and for a limited period of time) to work a bit harder and bring your home back to a comfortable temperature. Alternatively you can increase your heating setpoint in the Havenwise app.

The learning phase lasts for about 2 days on average, but can last shorter or longer depending on the particular building. You will see an indication in the Havenwise app when your heat pump is going through the learning phase.

More technical explanation

During the learning phase, Havenwise will operate on a standard weather compensation curve with room influence. The building model is being calibrated, so there is no predictive optimisation yet. That means:

  • The flow temperature for the heat pump is determined by the outdoor temperature and the difference between the indoor temperature and the target indoor temperature.

  • Your tariff is not taken into account yet. So the heat pump might operate outside of the cheap period in your tariff. No worries, as said above the learning phase typically only lasts for 2 days!

  • The heat pump will try to achieve your desired indoor temperature during the time periods you have set in your Havenwise heating schedules. Outside of the defined time periods, the heat pump will work with a setback temperature of 16°C. So it makes sense to set a stable 24/7 setpoint in the Havenwise app during the learning phase.
