Why did my heating come on when I didn’t need it?

Reasons why your heat pump was active when you weren't expecting it.

Havenwise works continuously to ensure that your home is heated in line with your schedule while ensuring maximum efficiency and lowest cost. This means that we might sometimes run your heating, even if you think you don't need it. Here's a few reasons why:

Havenwise is preparing for your next setpoint

If you have a setpoint programmed in a few hours from now, Havenwise will start pre-heating the house in advance to gradually lift the temperature to meet your future setpoint.

Havenwise is making use of cheap electricity because you’re on a time of use tariff

If you have a time of use tariff with cheaper and more expensive periods through the day, Havenwise takes these into account to optimise the operation of the heat pump.

Mathematically, it is almost always the cheapest thing to do. If you have electricity that is 3x cheaper now than in 2 hours from now, the heat pump can be 3x less efficient and still break even!

If you want to disable this feature for your heat pump (for instance because you have large batteries), you can disable tariff optimisation in the Havenwise app. Learn more about the various modes here.

Havenwise is maintaining an optimal setback

In between 2 setpoints, Havenwise will calculate the optimal setback. That means it will calculate how far it can let the temperature drop before it needs to start ramping up again.

Very often, the optimal setback from a cost perspective is not much below your target temperatures (for instance only 1°C lower or even less). As a result, the heat pump may ramp down let the room temperature decline gradually, but might not be fully off.

This ensures that your heating is as cheap as possible. Turning the heat pump off and ramping it up more aggressively just ahead of your setpoint would be a less efficient way of using the heat pump and would make things more expensive.

A sudden drop in temperature was registered

Sometimes a sudden drop in indoor temperature is picked up by Havenwise. That’s typically because a door or window opened. Havenwise always aims to meet your targets in the Havenwise app, so it will ramp up the heat pump to bring the house back up to temperature.
